Caption: 3D angiogram showing a posterior view (from the back) of a distal vertebral artery and basilar artery which shows severe narrowing (stenosis). The severe narrowing is from advanced arteriosclerosis. If the narrowing is severe enough it can result in a stroke (acute onset of a neurological deficit). After this 3D image was obtained the severe stenosis was treated with a stent. This is a wire meshlike hollow tubular device which opens the narrowed vessels and helps to maintain a more normal size of the blood vessel thereby restoring blood flow into the regions supplied by the stented blood vessel. This method can prevent strokes from occurring. It is often performed by an interventional radiologist or interventional neuroradiologist (endovascular neurosurgeon).
