Caption: colour enhanced 3D cerebral angiogram of a patient with 2 aneurysms arising from the intracranial internal carotid artery (ICA). An aneurysm is an abnormal enlargement of a blood vessel. They are dangerous because as they get bigger the wall of the blood vessel gets thinner and can tear, resulting in bleeding inside of the head. One of the patients aneurysms was treated by traditional neurosurgery (the large curved metallic looking object) and the other with GDC coils. GDC coiling is a minimally invasive procedure where an Endovascular Neurosurgeon places a tiny catheter inside the aneurysm and places many tiny platinum coils inside the aneurysm sac until it is completely filled. This keeps blood from entering and removes the risk of bleeding.
