Caption: This colour enhanced cross section CT scan of the brain was obtained from a person with a severe head injury. The injury resulted in bleeding (purple crescent shaped densities) beneath the dura mater, one of the membranes covering the brain. These collections of blood act as space-occupying lesions. There is a finite amount of space within the skull, enough to contain the brain and only the brain. If any expansion or growth occurs, like a tumor or in this case bleeding, the space cannot accomodate it. This will result in pressure (mass effect) upon the adjacent brain. Often neurosurgical intervention is needed to remove the tumor or blood clot to relieve the pressure on the brain.
