Caption: This composite of 4 axial (cross sectional) MRI images shows the typical appearance of hypertensive encephalopathy which is also called posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). This occurs when there is severe elevation of blood pressure with transient edema occurring which is often in the posterior circulation due to a poorer vascular regulatory mechanism in comparison to the anterior/carotid circulation.
