Dermatitis. View of the mouth of a child showing perioral dermatitis. The skin is inflamed, red and scaly in the area external to the lips and including the edges of the lips. Dermatitis is the general name for an inflammation of the skin, sometimes due to an allergy but in many cases occurring without known cause. Seborrhoeic dermatitis commonly develops on the face (particularly the nose and eyebrows) and scalp. It closely resembles the condition seen here. Treatment may include applying corticosteroid drugs, or the avoidance of substances that may cause an allergic response.
