Caption: Down's syndrome man. A 34 year old Down's Syndrome male patient has his hand bandaged by a nurse after receiving chemotherapy. He has a catheter attached to peripheral blood vessels in his hand. Down's syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality resulting in mental handicap and a characteristic physical appearance. People with Down's syndrome also have a higher- than-average incidence of heart defects, congenital deafness, and acute leukaemia. This patient is suffering from acute myeloid leukaemia, a cancer of white blood cells. Chemotherapy involves the use of cytotoxic drugs.
