Seborrhoeic dermatitis. Close-up of a red, flaky skin rash (seborrhoeic dermatitis) around a baby's eyebrows. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is an itchy rash that affects the face (typically the nose and eyebrows), back, scalp and chest. On the scalp it is the most common cause of dandruff. The cause is often unknown, but the rash can occur as a result of an allergy, and sometimes develops during times of stress. Treatment depends on the individual case. Corticosteroid drugs can reduce severe inflammation, and drugs that kill microorganisms can arrest an infection. It is important to avoid scratching affected areas or exposing them to irritants such as detergents.
