Caption: Diverticulosis. Coloured X-ray of the colon (large intestine) of a 62 year old man with diverticulosis. The colon contains numerous diverticula, small pouch-like structures that protrude out of weak spots in the intestinal wall. They are thought to be caused by a low-fibre diet and so are very common in the developed world. In most cases diverticulosis is symptomless and causes no problems. Occasionally the diverticula can become inflamed and infected, a condition called diverticulitis, causing abdominal pain and constipation. Treatment is with a high fibre diet. The patient was given an enema containing radio- opaque barium prior to the X-ray to highlight any anomalies.
