Caption: These sequential images were obtained from a nuclear medicine scan utilised to diagnose the site of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. These images show the progressive accumulation of a nuclear isotope which was injected intravenously in the descending colon. As time goes on the volume of isotope which is tagged to the red blood cells leaks out of the blood vessels at the site of bleeding and it then conforms to the shape of the intestine and becomes somewhat tubular as can be seen in images #11 through #16. Here the isotope is accumulating in the lower descending colon (large intestine). The source of bleeding could be from a diverticulum,a colon cancer or even an arterial-venous malformation (AVM). The tree-like linear structures are the abdominal aorta and iliac vessels. The kidneys are faintly seen and at the top of the image you can see the bottom of the liver.
