Caption: Frontal temporal dementia. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain of a 50 year old with frontal temporal dementia. The front of the brain is at left. The frontal (left) and temporal (centre) lobes have atrophied (shrunk). This is a rare form of dementia that often affects people at a younger age than most other dementias. Symptoms include changes in personality and behaviour, such as loss of inhibitions and empathy, language problems and changes in eating habits. This patient also had bipolar disorder. There is no cure for the disease.
