Caption: Retina damage from diabetes. Ophthalmoscope image of diabetic retinopathy, where severe damage to the retina has been caused by diabetes. Red blood vessels are seen emerging from the yellow optic disc (right). The red patch is a serious haemorrhage, where blood has leaked from blocked capillaries. This has caused a reduction in blood flow to other areas of the retina, leading to the proliferative growth of new capillaries (left). The yellow patches (left) are fatty exudates, caused by the increased permeability of blood vessels. Diabetic retinopathy may lead to blindness if left untreated. Bleeding can be treated by laser photocoagulation, and blood sugar level maintenance can slow the disease's progress.
