Caption: Retina damage from diabetes. Ophthalmoscope image of diabetic retinopathy in the right eye, where damage to the retina has been caused by diabetes. Red blood vessels are seen emerging from the yellow optic disc (right). The red spots are haemorrhages, blood leaking from blocked capillaries, causing a reduction in blood flow to some areas of the retina. The light yellow patches (upper left and right) are areas of fatty substances that have leaked from the damaged blood vessels. Diabetic retinopathy may lead to blindness if left untreated. Bleeding can be treated by laser photocoagulation, and blood sugar level maintenance can slow the disease's progress.
