Caption: Eczema on arm. Close-up of eczema in the crook of the elbow (anticubital fossa). The skin is swollen & red & appears scaly. There are breaks in the skin at centre. Eczema is an inflammation of the skin, accompanied by itching, scaling or blisters. Usually the cause is unknown, but occasionally it is an allergic reaction. There are four main types of eczema. Atopic, this usually occurs in child- hood. Nummular which normally occurs in adults. Stasis ezcema that occurs in people with varicose veins and hand eczema which is an allergic reac- tion, often to detergents. Eczema is treated with soothing ointments, corticosteroid and antihist- amine drugs & antibiotics are used.
