Eczema on hand. Close-up of a patient's hand with a severe eczema rash across the knuckles. The inflamed skin has become scaly and cracked. Eczema is an itchy skin inflammation that in severe cases produces small blisters that weep and become crusted. It sometimes results from an allergy, but often the cause is unknown. The itchiness provokes scratching, which aggravates the condition. Treat- ment usually consists of a soothing ointment and dressing. In severe cases anti-inflammatory drugs may be given, as well as antibiotics if the rash becomes infected.
