This EEG shows focal epilepsy, where only part of the brain is affected. Here, the EEG shows chaotic activity in the left centrotemporal area (bottom two traces, left temporal lobe highlighted orange). Epilepsy can take many forms, and this is benign epilepsy, an inherited childhood form of epilepsy that normally improves with age. An EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain (brain waves) using scalp electrodes (labelled at far left).
