Caption: Brain waves in epilepsy. Electroencephalogram (EEG) of a 20-year-old's brain during an epileptic episode (chaotic brain activity). This EEG shows focal epilepsy, where only part of the brain is affected. Here, the chaotic activity is mostly in the 4th and 8th traces, and on the right-hand side of the brain. Epilepsy can have many effects, and this is simple epilepsy, which means that the patient does not lose consciousness. The cause of this epilepsy is unknown. An EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain (brain waves) using electrodes attached to the scalp (electrode locations labelled at far left).
