Caption: Brain and brain waves in epilepsy. 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a brain (seen from the front), overlaid with an electroencephalogram (EEG) of a 18-year-old's brain during an epileptic episode (chaotic brain activity). This EEG shows complex epilepsy, where complex means that the patient loses consciousness. Although large parts of the brain are affected, this is technically still focal (localised) epilepsy (central traces are less affected). During this epileptic episode, the patient's speech was incoherent and there were spasms in the patient's left hand. An EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain (brain waves) using electrodes attached to the scalp (electrode locations labelled at far left).
