Caption: Brain waves in epilepsy. Electroencephalogram (EEG) of a 6-year-old child's brain during an epileptic episode (chaotic brain activity). This EEG shows generalized epilepsy, where the whole brain cortex is affected: all the EEG traces show chaotic brain waves. This is a type of epilepsy called petit mal or absence, named for the blank look on the patient's face. An EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain (brain waves) using electrodes attached to the scalp. The arrangement of these electrodes is shown at far left, on diagrams of the head seen from above.
