Eczema skin condition. Male patient in a hospital bed with lesions (red) on his arm in a severe case of the skin condition eczema. Eczema is inflammation of the skin, which causes flaking skin, itching and the development of small blisters. If the rash is scratched too much it may become infected. The patient had been hospitalised with surrogate alcohol poisoning. The term surrogate alcohol covers both illegally brewed alcoholic drinks and non-beverage forms of alcohol found in car products, cleaning products and medicines. High levels of ethanol, or small quantities of other alcohols such as methanol, are toxic and can kill. Photographed in Russia in 2006.
