Caption: This axial (cross sectional) CT image of the chest in a person who smokes shows the typical appearance of emphysematous changes. These are the clustered regions which appear very dark. There is destruction of the alveolar walls and air trapping in these regions making them appear darker (because there is more in these abnormal regions).
