Caption: Ectodermal dysplasia. Six month old boy with ectodermal dysplasia (ED). ED is a group of genetic disorders characterised by an absence or deficiency of function of teeth, hairs, sweat glands and nails. There is no cure for the condition. Major problems arise from the patients' inability to sweat, and high fevers must be guarded against. Dentures can be made to compensate for the lack of teeth (known as oligodontia), and dry skin must be watched to prevent cracking and infection.
