Caption: Close-up photograph of the eye showing acute chlamydial conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the delicate mucous membrane covering the front of the eye & the insides of the eyelids, due to the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. The conjunctiva becomes red, swollen & may discharge water or pus. Chlamydial conjunctivitis usually occurs as a secondary cross-infection from a primary genital infection. Treatment is with tetracycline antibiotics.
