Caption: Cataract surgery complication. Close-up of an eye showing corneal scarring and calcification which arose after a surgical operation to correct a cataract. Cataract is a common eye disorder in elderly people in which the crystalline lens of the eye loses transparency. It never causes complete blindness but the clarity and detail of the image is progressively lost. In the surgical operation the affected lens is removed and replaced by an artificial implant. Cataract surgery gives excellent results in most cases, provided the eye is otherwise healthy.
