Caption: Acute iritis. Close up of an adult's right eye with iritis and corneal inflammation. The cornea (usually white) is bloodshot & the eye is weeping. Iritis is an inflammation of the iris, usually caused by autoimmune disorders. However, it can be caused by infections such as syphilis & tuberculosis. Treatment involves taking corticosteriod drugs to reduce inflammation; atropine is dropped into the eye to block nerve impulses to the iris muscles.
