Caption: Inflamed pinguecula. Close-up of a patient's eye with an inflamed pinguecula. The thickened yellow spot to the left of the iris is the pinguecula. It is surrounded by conspicuous, red blood vessels in the white of the eye. A pinguecula is a small, benign, yellowish spot on the conjunctiva (the membrane on the surface of the eye). It is thought to be caused by degenerative changes in the con- junctiva associated with ageing. The yellow colour is caused by build up of elastic fibres. The spots are most common in the elderly. They are usually harmless but can be removed if unsightly.
