Caption: Cataract. Close-up of a cataract in an elderly patient's eye. A cataract is a lens that has become cloudy, obscuring vision. The condition is caused by changes in the delicate protein fibres inside the lens - a natural consequence of ageing. Onset of symptoms is almost imperceptible and loss of visual clarity occurs slowly. Normal eyesight can be restored by cataract surgery, where the diseased lens is removed and an artificial plastic lens put in its place.
