Meibomian cyst. Close up of an adult patient's eye showing a reddish swelling on the upper eyelid caused by a meibomian cyst (also known as chalazion). Such painless cysts are caused by an obstruction in one of the secretory (meibomian) glands which lubricate the eyelids. Meibomian cysts occur in all age groups and may be removed surgically if they become large. Infected cysts require antibiotic applications, incision and curettage.
