Caption: Allergic conjunctivitis. Close-up of the bloodshot eye of a 59 year-old woman patient. The redness in the white of this patient's eye is caused by allergic conjunctivitis: inflammation of the membrane (the conjunctiva) that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the white of the eye. Allergic conjunctivitis can be a reaction to wearing contact lenses, or caused by environmental factors such as pollen, pollution or cigarette smoke. Antihistamine eyedrops may be given as treatment.
