Caption: Retinopathy of prematurity. Ophthalmoscope view of a 50 year-old patient's retina suffering retinopathy of prematurity. Retinopathy describes a disorder in a person's retina. In this case the optic disc, where nerves and blood vessels enter the eye, is abnormally diffuse (yellow, centre right). The most light sensitive region of the retina (the macula, red at far left) has dark spots around it. Branching blood vessels are red. This disorder, which causes abnormal vision, was caused by the patient having a premature birth. Treatment includes surgery.
