Caption: Detached retina. Ophthalmoscope image of a detached retina in a patient's eye. The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. A normal retina has a flat, uniform appearance rather than the creased effect seen here. Retinal detachment occurs when the retina is torn, causing fluid to accumulate behind it. This lifts it away from the underlying choroid membrane. It often occurs for no apparent reason, although an eye injury or some diseases (diabetes and sickle cell anaemia) may also be causes. It causes a loss of vision over the affected part of the visual field. Laser treatment can restore the patient's vision in the majority of cases.
