Caption: Viral conjunctivitis. Bloodshot eyes of a patient suffering from viral conjunctivitis. The conjunctiva is a membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the eye. Viral conjunctivitis causes the membrane and its blood vessels to become inflamed, resulting in redness, irritation, itching and, occasionally, abnormal sensitivity to light. Viral conjunctivitis can spread rapidly in a population. It can also be triggered by a cold, sore throat or another viral illness. There is no specific cure for viral conjunctivitis and it usually clears up without treatment.
