Caption: Split earlobe. Close-up of the split earlobe of a 44-year-old woman following recurrent infections. The patient had repeatedly worn non-sterile cheap metal earrings in her pierced ear which had caused infections. Over time these constant infections destroyed the ear tissue downwards from the hole until it caused a split. The patient underwent plastic surgery to repair the damage.
