Perforated eardrum. Otoscope view of a child's perforated eardrum (tympanic membrane). The eardrum is the structure that transmits sound from the external ear to the middle and inner ears. This perforation was caused by chronic otitis media (a chronic middle ear infection), and has revealed the malleus (hammer bone) of the middle ear behind it. Perforated eardrums heal naturally once the underlying cause has been treated.
