Middle ear drainage tube. Otoscope view of a trans-tympanic drainage tube (grommet) being used in a child's perforated eardrum (tympanic membrane). The eardrum is the structure that transmits sound from the external ear to the middle and inner ears. In cases of chronic otitis media (chronic middle ear infection), the pressure of pus building up inside the ear can cause the eardrum to periodically rupture. A drainage tube can be implanted to prevent this.
