Caption: Tonsilitis due to glandular fever, showing both inflamed & infected tonsils at the back of the throat (white patches). Glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis) usually affects young adults with symptoms of fever, tonsilitis (pharyngitis) and enlarged lymph nodes. It is associated with the presence of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) - antibodies in blood specific to the EBV may be detected using immunofluorescence. In some cases of the disease antibodies to cytomegalovirus & other viruses have been found.
