Close-up of gangrene of infected fingers

Rights Managed

Gangrene of the hand. Close-up of a severely infected hand showing gangrene (tissue death). The middle finger here is black at its tip, indicating the tissue is dead (necrosis). This gangrene developed from an infection which took hold after an accident while the patient was scaling fish. The patient had been receiving bone marrow trans- plants for an impaired immune system. A weakened immune system may lead to infections taking hold more easily, and spreading much faster than they would do in a healthy person. Antibiotic drugs may prevent the infection leading to gangrene, but in this advanced stage, amputation of the hand may be necessary.
