Caption: Gangrenous toes. Gangrene (localised tissue death, black) resulting from ulcers on the toes of a 77 year old woman with peripheral vascular disease (PVD). An ulcer is an open sore that does not heal and may turn necrotic, as seen here. PVD is a condition resulting from obstructed peripheral arteries, caused by underlying conditions such as atherosclerosis, stenosis, an embolism or a thrombus. PVD results in ischaemia (restricted blood supply), ulceration and gangrene. This gangrene was so bad that it required leg amputation. For the same patient's leg, see image M165/362.
