Caption: Cutaneous herpes simplex: wart-like blisters on a hand. The herpes simplex viruses are some of the most common human virus parasites. Two types are distinguished: type 1 (HSV-1) is generally associated with most oral (cold sores) and central nervous system infections, and type 2 (HSV-2) with genital herpes. HSV-1 infection commonly occurs in childhood; following the primary infection, the virus persists in a latent state to re-appear and cause recurrent cold sores. HSV-1 infection is not believed to provide immunity to HSV-2; both virus types have been isolated from the same patient.
