Caption: Hand, foot & mouth disease. Skin lesions on the hand of a four year-old girl due to hand, foot and mouth disease (HFM). HFM is a common disease of young children caused by coxsackievirus infection. HFM tends to break out in small epidemics in nursery schools during the summer months. It produces a relatively mild illness, with symptoms of loss of appetite, blistering of the hands, feet and inside of the mouth and a mild fever. No treatment is given, other than mild pain-killing drugs for painful blisters. The illness is not related to foot-and-mouth disease of cattle.
