Caption: Hypertension. Illustration of some of the organs affected by hypertension (abnormal high blood pressure). The numbers at left indicate systolic blood pressure in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). 140 mmHg is considered to be unhealthily high. At lower left, part of the heart is seen, with a grey area of tissue death (myocardial infarction, or heart attack) seen at lower centre. At lower right is a kidney showing the typical lumpy appearance caused by a poor blood supply. The artery (red) seen supplying the kidney is narrowed (stenosis). At upper right is part of the brain showing aneurysms (swellings) of the blood vessels there, which may burst, leading to a stroke.
