Caption: Swollen gallbladder, gross clinical specimen. The gallbladder is the pear-shaped organ. The rest of the tissue is the liver, to which it is attached. As the swelling has been caused by fluid, this is termed hydrocholcystis. The underlying cause will need to be treated, together with draining of the fluid if required. Severe and recurrent disorders may require surgical removal (cholecystectomy) of the gallbladder. The gallbladder stores bile from the liver, ready to be released into the digestive system for the digestion of fats and the excretion of bile pigments.
