Caption: Liver haematoma. Baby being treated for a liver haematoma, a collection of blood in or around the liver, which causes swelling of the abdomen. A liver haematoma most often results from trauma to the liver, however it can be caused by some invasive surgical procedures. Rupture of a liver haematoma into the peritoneal cavity can be fatal. Diagnosis of a liver haematoma is best performed by computed tomography (CT) scanning, in order to decide whether surgical intervention is required.
