Caption: Haemarthrosis. Leg of a 68-year-old woman with haemarthrosis of the knee. Haemarthrosis is bleeding into a joint. It is usually caused by trauma, but may be due to haemophilia or overuse of anticoagulant drugs. It is a painful condition and the accumulation of blood leads to stiffness and restriction of motion in the joint. It is treated with painkillers and rest. The joint is rarely drained due to the risk of infection.
