Caption: Congenital hypothyroidism. Scintigram of a single, enlarged thyroid gland lobe, caused by the failure of the second lobe to form during foetal development (hemiagenesis). The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones controlling the body's metabolism. When hemiagenesis occurs, the lack of both lobes results in compensatory hypertrophy (enlargement) and hypothyroidism (lowered thyroid function). Treatment involves the use of levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroid hormone. Using the radioactive tracer iodine-123, a scintigram shows the activity of the thyroid gland.
