Caption: Hepatitis C. Light micrograph of a section through a liver affected by the Hepatitis C virus. Infection with this virus causes inflammation and scarring of the liver (cirrhosis). The infection has caused T-lymphocyte white blood cells (dark purple nuclei) to migrate and accumulate in the liver tissue, for instance at bottom left. Numerous globules of fat (white) are also seen. Hepatitis C is spread through blood or sexual contact. It can be treated by drugs if diagnosed early, but can cause fatal liver damage. Haematoxylin-eosin-saffron stain. Magnification: x220 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
