Caption: Century plant (Agave americana). This succulent plant is native to the hot, arid parts of the southwestern USA and Mexico, but it has been introduced worldwide as an ornamental. It takes its name from its flowering habits, often taking many years to send up its one flower spike, after which it dies. Photographed in Portugal, where it was introduced in the 16th century.
