Caption: Lateral x-ray of the chest area of a person with calcified aortic stenosis, the narrowing of the opening of the aortic valve due to the fusion of the 3 cusps which comprise the valve. The aortic valve regulates blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta, the major artery of the body. Aortic stenosis obstructs the flow of blood from the left ventricle during systole, the period of the cardiac cycle when the heart contracts, resulting in breathlessness, angina & fainting. Treatment is by surgical replacement with an artificial valve.
