Caption: Myocardial fibrosis. Light micrograph of a section of a human heart showing myocardial fibrosis, the thickening and scarring of heart connective tissue. A thick band of connective tissue is seen at centre (pink), which has formed between bands of cardiac muscle (brown). Myocardial fibrosis is caused by inflammation of the heart, infection (viral), or from a lack of oxygen due to inadequate blood flow as happens in myocardial infarction (heart attack). It may also be caused by cytotoxic drugs. The growth of fibrous tissue can impair heart function, and leave lasting scars. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
