Caption: Atherosclerosis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of a cross-section through a human coronary artery of the heart showing athero- sclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a build-up of fatty plaques on the walls of arteries. The artery wall is red; hyperplastic cells are pink; fatty plaque is yellow. A large section of the artery width is blocked as only a tiny portion of the lumen is seen (blue, far right). Blockage is partly plaque but mostly due to the hyperplastic reaction of cells in the artery wall which have multiplied. Atherosclerosis leads to irregular bloodflow and clot formation, which can block the coronary artery resulting in heart attack.
