Caption: Heart attack. Illustration of a section through the human heart after myocardial infarction (heart attack). The section shows the chambers of the left atrium (at top) and the large left ventricle (below). The bicuspid valve (cup-shaped) lies between the left atrium and left ventricle. Due to myocardial infarction, the area of the thick muscular heart wall of the left ventricle has died (black area). This has occurred due to the inter- ruption or blockage of the heart's blood supply through the coronary artery which supply blood to this heart wall. Symptoms of myocardial infarction include a prolonged, squeezing pain in the chest. This may be fatal.
